Building Permit Issued- City Cabins Partners with Dow
City Cabins is pleased to become a Dow partner,” said Martha Rose, President of Martha Rose Construction, Inc.
June 9, 2011, Seattle, Wa- City Cabins today announced they have selected Dow to provide them with their blue foam insulation.
Background
Since 2005, Martha Rose Construction (MRC) has been using a wall assembly that later became known in the Pacific Northwest as the “Martha Wall.” It consists of 2×6 studs with ½” DOW blue foam added under the exterior plywood. With blown in fiberglass batts, this wall achieves an impressive R-26, which has met the criteria for the Built Green 5-star certification since its inception in 2005. This closed cell sheet foam is virtually air and moisture proof and the framers find it easy to work with because they can install it with the plywood using a nail size that is just one size longer. From 2005 through 2008 MRC has constructed 20 homes using the “Martha Wall” with ½” DOW blue.
Current Project
DOW has agreed to partner with MRC on our current project “City Cabins on Queen Anne Hill” by furnishing us with blue foam that will be installed under the plywood exterior walls and 4” of blue foam under-slab insulation. These upgrades will bring us closer to achieving net-zero energy.
Also, in our seismic area building new homes with foam under the plywood has been tested by Oregon State University and found theses homes have almost 3 times the deflection capability as a plywood wall without foam when 5600 pounds of force are applied to the assembly. The foam dissipates the kinetic energy by providing cushion.
During the building process there will be continuous progressive workshops on and offsite explaining our simple and effective building techniques.
